“Photography is a magic thing!” wrote Jacques Henri Lartigue, when he was seven years old. My name is David McCarthy and I’ve been looking for the “magic thing” ever since I opened my Kodak Brownie when I was seven years old, to see what was inside, and exposed half a roll of film!
Here I am with the Brownie, age 4 1/2.
Once in a while, I will also be posting photos taken by my Grandfather, D.L. Campbell. They are from a collection of slides that I inherited.

Hi David, I am enjoying your posts. I too find inspiration in Lartigue insofar as he started young and was unaware of (or Ignored) conventions…….. and he wasn’t ‘discovered’ until he was in his 60s ….. that gives hope to us all….. !

i understand exactly what you feel. i started doing film photography just last year and it brought me happiness and frustrations at the same time.

Thanks! I have several inherited cameras, but not the Brownie. My brother has one. I think they originally belonged to my Mom and her brother. Going through old family photos for A Family’s Album I’ve seen them show up various peoples hands. A nice talisman.

Thank you! Soleri was one of the mystic heroes when I was in school.
I felt it was a bit uncanny that I decided to look more into Soleri’s work just before he died. I am really fascinated by his vision, but I am struggling with the question as to how it would be applicable on the scale needed to make a difference. Still- he had the guts to object to consumerism when it really started to take off! If ever you get the chance visit Vietri Sul Mare, it’s fascinating and extremely cooky!
I loved the picture with the Japanese woman waiting for the bus, so beautiful. Somehow the Japanese know how to achieve serenity within chaos.
I will definitely search out more examples of his early work.

When I was a child I often walked away from fellow players for looking at the world through a glass shard that I was picking up on the ground or the transparent envelope of candies. And I was so happy to see the universe transformed. When I had these tiny gizmos I would climb on a tree branch or on some wall that allowed me to stay upside down because that way the world looks different. For us the image of the world is like a long film with frames (which are portions of spacetime) all beautiful accurate next to each other, but as it is the image that sits between one frame and the other?

I remember my Brownie… but I was always too chicken to change the film myself, so my dad always did it and I never got the chance to overexpose any as you did! 🙂
🙂 It left a mark on me…I hesitate to push buttons, open doors, enter strange bars and restaurants until I pause and figure out what I’m getting into.
