“Photography is a magic thing!” wrote Jacques Henri Lartigue, when he was seven years old. My name is David McCarthy and I’ve been looking for the “magic thing” ever since I opened my Kodak Brownie when I was seven years old, to see what was inside, and exposed half a roll of film!
Here I am with the Brownie, age 4 1/2.
Once in a while, I will also be posting photos taken by my Grandfather, D.L. Campbell. They are from a collection of slides that I inherited.
I love it!
I nominated you for The Versatile Blogger on my blog, ocaclibrary.wordpress.com. Congrats! Keep up the great work!
Hi sanslartigue. Thank you for following our blog. We would like to send you some letterpress bookmarks as our way of saying thank you and Happy New Year. For details read: http://peachfarmstudio.wordpress.com/2011/12/31/free-letterpress-bookmarks/ Happy blogging in 2012!
Hi David, I am enjoying your posts. I too find inspiration in Lartigue insofar as he started young and was unaware of (or Ignored) conventions…….. and he wasn’t ‘discovered’ until he was in his 60s ….. that gives hope to us all….. !
Regards John
…. and thanks for visiting Life Photography & Other Mistakes.
Thank you very much!
They say it’s your birthday! Happy Birthday, Mr. Bright Eyes (Because they twinkle!).
Thank you for checking out my blog and commenting on the “upside” image. I am new at blogging and have much to learn.Photography is my passion.I dig your blog and like your photography style. Have a great day.
Daniel
i understand exactly what you feel. i started doing film photography just last year and it brought me happiness and frustrations at the same time.
i’m curious, do you still have your kodak brownie? must be an amazing camera.
nice meeting you David and great blog 🙂
Thanks! I have several inherited cameras, but not the Brownie. My brother has one. I think they originally belonged to my Mom and her brother. Going through old family photos for A Family’s Album I’ve seen them show up various peoples hands. A nice talisman.
Hi David,
I’m really glad you found my blog http://reflectionsofchina.wordpresscom and took the time to leave some likes for my work, so thanks for that, it is appreciated 🙂
If you have time, please take a look at my other photo blog http://moreimagesfromme.wordpress.com this site is for images i take in other countries around the world as I travel. I do hope you like that site too :)…You have a really nice blog here, so I too will follow and take my time to enjoy your world.
BTW, I love Lartigue’s work too, he was one of the greats in my opinion, I love his statement “I’m going to take pictures of Everything” 🙂
Thanks again and Regards Mark.
Thanks, Mark, for checking in! I will definitely take a deeper look at both your blogs.
Thanks for coming by my blog. I was amazed on coming to your blog how much we seem to be taking the same subjects – your buildings and sculpture are really good, and mixed with cycling and travel. Doesn’t get any better!
Thanks
Kevin, you’re welcome, and thanks for the kind comparison!

Thank you for stopping by at my blog. You’ve got a great eye–I particularly like the hanging box.
I’m not surprised you’d like something that scale! It’s probably still a lot larger than your work.
You had a Brownie!

Hi David, thanks for checking out my Oranje blog. I read your “about” with interest, particularly as I have just inherited 1000s of slides taken by my parents. I did a “before instagram” post on my travel photo blog. You might enjoy it. The slides are a bit raw and original but I love them. regards Peet
Collections of family photos imply some sort of responsibility to share…I’ve been having a great time exploring and using them for various purposes! Good luck with your explorations 🙂

Thanks for checking in!
thank you
There is some really beautiful stuff here, my compliments, and thanks for checking in on my blog.
Thank you! Soleri was one of the mystic heroes when I was in school.
I felt it was a bit uncanny that I decided to look more into Soleri’s work just before he died. I am really fascinated by his vision, but I am struggling with the question as to how it would be applicable on the scale needed to make a difference. Still- he had the guts to object to consumerism when it really started to take off! If ever you get the chance visit Vietri Sul Mare, it’s fascinating and extremely cooky!
I loved the picture with the Japanese woman waiting for the bus, so beautiful. Somehow the Japanese know how to achieve serenity within chaos.
I will definitely search out more examples of his early work.
Just wanted to say THANKS for stopping by my blog and for the positive feedback – quite encouraging.
Best
DN
Magic it is! Happy shooting……….

Thanks for visiting my http://www.onhighblog.wordpress.com site. I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your site. Especially the B&W. I have gotten away from my BW roots since going digital because I have not as yet been satisfied with the outcomes. Your work makes me want to work on that, as BW is better for translating the forms/shadows I see. With my color work I have focused more on the landscape, especially the Southwest US landscape which I find captivating. http://www.highdeserttravels.wordpress.com
I will keep an eye on your site for more interesting pics.
Thank you!
Thanks for visiting http://andykiddphoto.wordpress.com/ all the best, Andy

Thank you John
When I was a child I often walked away from fellow players for looking at the world through a glass shard that I was picking up on the ground or the transparent envelope of candies. And I was so happy to see the universe transformed. When I had these tiny gizmos I would climb on a tree branch or on some wall that allowed me to stay upside down because that way the world looks different. For us the image of the world is like a long film with frames (which are portions of spacetime) all beautiful accurate next to each other, but as it is the image that sits between one frame and the other?
Thank you SO much for visiting my blog because now I have found you and your work is rather wonderful.
Thank you! I look forward to seeing more of your work too.
You have a very nice blog with interesting pictures. I like your kind of photographs. I like also your chosen theme “Wu Wei”. I have my old theme turns into this. I will follow you.
Thank you very much!
I remember my Brownie… but I was always too chicken to change the film myself, so my dad always did it and I never got the chance to overexpose any as you did! 🙂
🙂 It left a mark on me…I hesitate to push buttons, open doors, enter strange bars and restaurants until I pause and figure out what I’m getting into.
Very wise.
